Alexandre Lacazette struck twice as Lyon came agonisingly close to a miracle second-leg fightback against Ajax.
The highly-rated striker grabbed two goals in a mad minute just before half-time after Kasper Dolberg had given the visitors a seemingly unassailable 5-1 aggregate lead.
Lacazette converted a penalty in 45th minute before scoring in first-half stoppage time.
That set up a second-half siege on Ajax’s goal, with Bruno Genesio’s side throwing everything at the Dutchmen.
